Calls to Collective Commitment

For: Any First Light organization interested in becoming an Ambassador.

We have been asked to deepen the commitment of First Light organizations to land and resource return. What does that look like, moving forward? Please join us in one of four calls to share stories and answer questions about deepening your organization’s commitment in becoming a First Light Ambassador.

Call 1: Wednesday, May 11 (10 AM – 11:30 AM)

Call 2: Thursday, May 26th (2 PM – 3:30 PM)

Call 3: Tuesday, June 14th (2 PM – 3:30 PM)

Call 4: Wednesday, June 29th (10 AM – 11:30 AM)

Canoe Trip with Steve Tatko and Elisa Schine


When: May 20th-22nd, 2022.
For: 8 people in the First Light Community. Learn more and express your interest here by April 15th. First come, first serve. 
Where: In-person in the West Grand Lakes region (if deemed safe by the CDC to gather)
Cost: Paid for by First Light, no cost to participants.

First Light is offering a canoe trip co-led by Steve Tatko, of the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) and a First Light Delegation member, and Elisa Schine in the West Grand Lake region.

Katahdin Gathering III


When: 2 days and 2 nights, June 7th and 8th, 2022.
For: Only Wabanaki Commission on Land and Stewardship and Conservation Community Delegation members and staff.
Where: In-person at New England Outdoors Center (if deemed safe by the CDC to gather)
Cost: Paid for by First Light, no cost to participants.

A gathering to discuss what’s working in our relationships, what’s not working, and what our collective work will look like in 2022-2023.

First Light Short Course

When: July 5th – 8th, 2022.
For: Anyone connected with land trusts, and particularly those in positions to make change in land trust organizations. Participants chosen by application, and priority will be given to First Light organizations, to land trusts in Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and New York; philanthropies in New England, and landholders in New England. Capped at 20 participants. Apply here.

Where: Knoll Farm, Waitsfield, Vermont
Cost: Tuition-free and supported by New Learning Journey, the nonprofit partner of First Light and Knoll Farm

Peter Forbes will offer a short course for conservationists, philanthropies, landholders who are interested in the path to becoming stronger accomplices to Indigenous peoples around their reclaiming and reconnecting to their traditional landscapes.  Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the throughline of white culture from colonization to conservation, an analysis of organizing approaches that support collective action to support Indigenous prosperity, and rich dialogue about land trusts can engage in this work. This course is taught by non-Native people on what dominant culture land-holding groups can do to relearn history, recenter Indigenous knowledge, and return land, decision-making, power and other resources to Indigenous partners. 

Initiation Trips I and II with Peter Forbes and others


When: 3 days each. Trip I: September 26th-29th, 2022. Trip II: September 30th-October 3rd, 2022.
For: First Light ambassador organizations and Delegation members. Trip I: Express your interest here. Trip II: Express your interest here. 
Where: In-person at Dickinson’s Reach, Machiasport, ME (if deemed safe by the CDC to gather)
Cost: Paid for by First Light, no cost to participants.

This program will be offered to First Light ambassador organizations and Delegation members and will entail group experiences in nature that will help you answer these fundamental questions:  What is calling you to do this work? What are the foundations of your commitment to it?  How do you hope to be changed by it? Why is this work important to the future of conservation in Maine? How do you hope it will shift what conservation means?

When: October 6th-10th, 2022. 
For: 10 people in the First Light Community. Express your interest here by September 10th. First come, first serve. 
Where: In-person on the West Branch of the Penobscot River (if deemed safe by the CDC to gather)
Cost: Paid for by First Light, no cost to participants.

First Light is offering a canoe trip led by Mahoosuc Guide Service with Master Guide Polly Mahoney, part of the First Light Learning Journey Cohort, down the West Branch of the Penobscot River.

First Light Training for Board Members


When: 2-3 days in November 2022 (TBD)
For: First Light ambassador organizations
Where: Zoom
Cost: Paid for by First Light, no cost to participants.

First Light will offer a short, 2-3 day training for board members to understand the importance of sharing and returning land with Wabanaki. 

Annual First Light Ambassador Summit


When: 1 day, November 2022
For: First Light ambassador organizations, Conservation Community Delegation, Wabanaki Commission members
Where: In person gathering, location TBD (if deemed safe by the CDC to gather)
Cost: Paid for by First Light, no cost to participants.

This summit will convene all First Light ambassador organizations to reconnect, share learning with each other, and hear from Wabanaki speakers.
